Proud to Be: Christopher's Journey of Strength and Advocacy

This week, we continue our Proud to Be series — a collection of stories honoring the resilience and pride within the Rio Grande Valley's LGBTQ+ community. Today, we are privileged to share the powerful journey of Christopher, a barber and dedicated advocate for trans rights.

My entire transition made me the strong person I am today. I have been advocating for trans rights since I was 16. However, there is one experience that changed my life. I dealt with some very transphobic administration officials at a school campus and had to endure years of it until I had a breaking point. In this class, I couldn't use any restroom. I couldn't talk to anyone without getting in trouble. I was harassed by adults constantly. They outed me to my mom without my consent and it made everything worse. My mom and I didn't have a great relationship afterwards. I had to leave home for a while and we didn't have any communication. It hurt. It almost cost me my dream of being a barber.

After dealing with unjustified treatments and nearly giving up, I decided to take that same pain and turn it into something powerful. I looked for another option and moved forward with my career. I gathered the strength I didn't even know I had in me and simply kept pushing forward. I worked two jobs, got an apartment with my partner, finished barber school, and followed through with my transition.

I am proud of all my accomplishments in general, but I am most proud of my career and the direction it is taking. I've connected with so many different individuals through barbering. I've helped the community through my work and that is what it's all about. Being able to provide a safe space where others feel seen, recognized, and respected means the world to me.

My experiences have definitely helped shape who I am today by making me wiser. I am now able to guide others through similar situations. I'm an open book and I will always share my story.

Most of my friends remained by my side and have supported my journey. My partner has been with me right from the start. We have been together for 8 years. She has witnessed every moment within my transition and career. My family and I had a rough start, but luckily, we are at a good place now. And of course, I can't forget my chosen family — the RGV's LGBTQ+ community. I owe my entire life to every individual that has been there supporting me.

When people would tell me it would get better, I thought it sounded cliche. At one point, I didn't think I'd make it past my teenage years. But it got better. It got so much better. You can't have a rainbow without a little rain. If you are dealing with transphobia, dysphoria, or even your own family turning against you because of who you are — I am here and you're not alone. I live loud and proud because others deserve to know there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Proud to Be: Finding Strength and Authenticity with Ciria

Ciria is a mother and advocate who has embraced her truest self while creating a loving and supportive home for her children and a safe space for the students she works with.

I'm proud of the strength I've found within me after all these years. No matter what adversities my children and I have faced, I can stand tall and feel proud of the work I've done. I'm building the life I always envisioned for us. Our challenges haven't stopped me from creating a home where my kids are seen, heard, and supported. And honestly, it doesn't hurt that I get to live as my truest self in our little family. My daughters know I'm their mom — but they also know, in their own way, that my identity is different from most moms'.

Even as a kid, I knew I didn't fit into norms. I remember taking school pictures in elementary where the only props were a teddy bear or a basketball. I've loved Michael Jordan since I was a toddler, but I wasn't an athlete. Still, I chose the basketball — not because I played, but because I didn't want to be forced into the "girl" choice. That moment has stayed with me.

Now I create safe, healthy space — not just for myself, but for others. My kids know that colors, toys, music — none of that has a gender. The students I work with know that I see and honor their families, no matter the label. Personally, I live in a way that feels true to me. I'm 36, still wear space buns, and buy clothes for myself and my kids from any section of the store, because we wear what makes us feel like us.

I've known I was part of the LGBTQ+ community since I was a child, but I've never been more in tune with my queerness and nonbinary identity than I am today. It's okay to give yourself permission to exist in whatever way feels truest to you — if it's safe. And it's okay if it takes time to figure out what that looks like. There's no one right way to be queer. That's the whole point.

And yes — you can be Christian and queer. I'm both.

Proud to Be: Norvy's Story

"I want others to know that even if so many people disapprove your way of being, it's going to be ok. And that you are beautiful just the way you are." — Norvy

I feel stronger today, after living so many things that have transformed my life and mindset. Today, I can say that I am not afraid of talking about my sexuality and atypical male physique. After years of low self-esteem and self-criticism, I have finally moved on to a better stage in my life.

I am proud of myself for fighting for my happiness and for what is right. I would often let others give their opinions and decide for me, which left me unhappy.

My experiences and my identity have all led me to be the strong person that I am. Fighting the prejudices, religion matters, family ideals, and many other situations to find my true authentic self.

The one person that supported me throughout my process of accepting and coming out is my friend Ilusion. She always told me that being different was OK. Our friendship grew quickly. I felt understood for the very first time. We had long walks and talks.

I want others to know that even if so many people disapprove your way of being, it's going to be ok. And that you are beautiful just the way you are. Listen to your gut and follow through.

Thank you, Norvy, for your courage and for trusting us with your story. It is an honor to archive it.

What to Expect During Your Fine Art Portrait Experience

Since launching our new website, we've been so touched by the incredible support and interest in our legacy-focused portraiture. One question we hear often is: "What's it actually like to be photographed by Cesar and Keila?"

We believe that creating timeless art should be a joyful and collaborative journey. From the moment you step into our studio — or meet us on location here in beautiful Brownsville and the RGV — our focus is entirely on you and your vision.

Your Personalized Discovery

It all begins with a conversation. Before your session, we'll connect for a complimentary consultation. This isn't just about logistics — it's about getting to know you, understanding what inspires you, and exploring the story you want to tell through your portrait. We'll discuss everything from wardrobe and location to the overall mood and feeling you envision for your final art.

The Power of Two: Your Dedicated Creative Team

On the day of your session, you'll have the full attention of our husband-and-wife team. Cesar will be behind the lens, guiding you with his artistic eye and technical expertise. Keila will be working alongside, ensuring every detail is perfect — from subtle adjustments to your pose and expression, to creating a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

This partnership is one of the things that makes the Cesar Castillo Portraiture experience so unique. Our clients often tell us how comfortable and at ease they feel, which is the greatest compliment we can receive.

More Than Just a Photoshoot: An Experience

We'll take our time, listen to your ideas, and create a space where you feel seen, valued, and empowered. Whether we're exploring the natural beauty of the Rio Grande Valley or crafting a classic studio look, our goal is to make the process as rewarding as the final artwork.

Your Legacy in the Making

After your session, the artistry continues with our meticulous post-processing to bring out the timeless beauty in your images. You'll then be invited to a private viewing to select the pieces that will become your cherished legacy art.

A fine art portrait experience with Cesar Castillo Portraiture is more than just taking pictures — it's about creating a lasting memory, capturing a piece of your story, and investing in art that will be treasured for generations to come.

Are you ready to begin your legacy portrait experience? We would be honored to tell your story.

What is a 'Legacy Portrait'?

In a world of endless selfies and photos that disappear in 24 hours, what does it mean to create something that lasts?

That's a Legacy Portrait.

It's more than just a picture. It's a piece of art, intentionally crafted to capture your true essence, your quiet strength, and your unique story. It's a conversation with the future — a way for your children and grandchildren to know who you were, not just what you looked like.

It's an investment in your personal history. It's a statement that says, "I was here, and my story matters."

At Cesar Castillo Portraiture, we don't just take photos. As a husband-and-wife team, we create a dedicated, high-touch experience to help you create a piece of art that will become a family heirloom.

The Other Half of the Experience: Meet Keila, The Heart of Our Studio

People often ask what it's like working with my wife, Keila. The simple answer is that Cesar Castillo Portraiture wouldn't exist without her. While I'm the one behind the main camera, Keila is the one who crafts the entire atmosphere of trust and comfort that our brand is built on.

Many clients, especially those coming in for a boudoir or intimate portrait session, arrive with a bundle of nerves. That's completely normal. And that's where Keila's magic begins. She is a master at breaking the ice, at sensing exactly what a person needs to feel at ease.

It's in the small things — a reassuring gesture, a perfectly timed compliment, a simple conversation that instantly brings a client's guard down. She has an intuitive gift for making people relax and forget they were ever nervous. She transforms a photoshoot from something intimidating into an experience that feels safe, empowering, and even fun.

But her role extends beyond creating the right energy. Keila is also a talented photographer in her own right, often working alongside me to capture behind-the-scenes moments and intimate details that add another layer of depth to your final gallery.

While my job is to find the right light and the perfect angle, Keila's job is to protect the energy of the room and document the subtle beauty of the process. She is the other half of this unique husband-and-wife experience, and her presence ensures that the journey of creating your portrait is just as beautiful as the final piece of art.

You Don't Have to Be a Model to Have a Portrait Session With Us

The number one thing we hear before a session is some version of "I'm not photogenic" or "I don't know how to pose." And every single time, by the end of the session, that same person is standing in front of the camera like they've been doing it their whole life.

That's not an accident. That's what we do.

Keila and I built Cesar Castillo Portraiture around one idea — that the experience of being photographed should feel as good as the photos look. We're not here to put you in front of a backdrop and fire off a hundred shots while you awkwardly smile. We're here to actually get to know you, make you laugh, and capture who you really are.

Our sessions are relaxed. We talk. We take our time. If something isn't working we try something else. Nobody is rushing you.

We shoot all over the Rio Grande Valley — South Padre Island at golden hour, outdoor locations in Brownsville, private studio settings depending on what your session calls for. Every location is chosen with intention, because where you are in a photo matters just as much as how you look.

By the time you see your gallery, you won't be looking at photos of yourself. You'll be looking at a version of yourself you maybe haven't seen before — confident, present, real.

That's what a portrait is supposed to do.

If you've been thinking about booking and something has been holding you back, let this be the nudge. We'd love to tell your story.
